It is a statutory requirement that schools are open for 190 days in the year and teachers are required to work for a further 5 professional development days.

Tower Hamlets also allows for two additional flexible days which schools should use for Eid ul-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Therefore, the total number of days that Tower Hamlets schools’ term time must cover in 2016/17 is 197 days. This enables schools to meet the statutory requirement to open for 190 days.

Individual schools are free to decide on the timing of the 5 professional development days which are usually added to the beginning and end of terms.
